01. What is NDIS?
The NDIS is the National Disability Insurance Scheme, designed to reform the way disability services are funded and delivered. The NDIS provides people with a permanent and significant disability (0 – 65 years) access to supports to help them take part in everyday activities and to achieve their individual goals and aspirations.
02. What is covered by NDIS?
The NDIS funds reasonable and necessary supports that help someone with a disability to: - Pursue their goals, dreams and aspirations - Increase their independence - Increase social and economic participation, and - Develop their capacity to actively take part in the community. This support may include education, employment, social participation, independence, living arrangements, and health and well-being.
03. What is NOT funded by NDIS?
The NDIS will not fund support that participants can access from mainstream services such as health and hospital care, education, childcare or aged care. The NDIS will not fund daily living expenses, income replacement, support that is likely to cause participant harm or pose a risk, or any supports that are not directly related to the participant’s disability.
04. Who is eligible for the NDIS?
To be eligible participants must be: - Under 65 years of age when they first access the scheme - an Australian Citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand Citizen who is a Protected Special Category Visa Holder - have a permanent or significant disability, then you may be eligible. To determine eligibility, visit the NDIA website and complete the My Access Checker Tool at http://www.ndis.gov.au/my-access-checker.
05. What is Supported Independent Living?
The NDIS defines Supported Independent Living (SIL) as: “Help with and/or supervision of daily tasks to develop the skills of an individual to live as independently as possible. These are the supports provided to a participant in their home, regardless of property ownership, and can be in a shared or individual arrangement.” At Alpha Carers Australia, we offer SIL as a shared living arrangement in spacious homes not only with experienced support workers but also with nurses on hand 24/7. Our trained staff is available to support house members with personal care, meal preparation, household tasks, shopping, attending medical appointments, recreational activities and much more.
06. Who manages and works in ACA Supported Independent Living?
Alpha Carers Australia is a company owned and operated by experienced WA nurses providing professional nursing and care services. We only employ experienced and trained support workers to provide support within our shared homes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week while house members are in their home. This includes shifts during the day and sleepover or active overnight shifts. Support workers are managed by a supervisor and the nurse on duty and overseen by operational manager. ACA staff vary in age, gender and nationality, and we promote cultural diversity amongst our staff to ensure we are always providing the best possible support for our clients from all backgrounds.
07. How many people could I be living with?
Alpha Carers Australia shared homes range in size from three to six bedrooms. Depending on your individual needs, we will work to ensure you are well-matched within your new home, making sure your fellow house members are close to your age and share some of your interests. You can contact us and arrange the viewing in available homes.
08. What are the costs of Supported Independent Living?
SIL is funded for eligible people by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) under Core Supports – Assistance with Daily Life. Assistance by a registered nurse for eligible people funded under CB Daily activity. The NDIS does not cover the cost of rent, utilities, meals and transport. This is paid to Alpha Carers Australia as board & lodging fees for the running costs of the home and is most commonly paid out of your Disability Support Pension.
09. Is assistance by a nurse included in Supported Independent Living?
The Alpha Carers Australia facilities do have a nurse on 24/7 duty at the facility. However personal assistance by a registered nurse for high care need clients must be confirmed in their NDIS plan, as well as their funded set hours per day under CB daily activity – Assistance by Registered/ Enrolled nurse.
10. Can I still use the services I used before moving (e.g. see my doctor, keep my usual daily program)?
Yes, you can keep all your services the same and Alpha Carers Australia will work closely with your other service providers to ensure your needs are being met. ACA support workers can also assist in taking you to these appointments.
11. Will my friends and family be allowed to visit me?
Yes, absolutely! Alpha Carers encourages family and friends to visit as often as you like. Our policies ensure that your right to meaningful relationships is protected and supported at all times. Alpha Carers Australia can also provide transport, to events and family outings. This can be rostered in your SIL plan to include extra support. You are also able to go out independently if you choose and staff will work with you to provide any support you may require to achieve this.
12. What can I bring with me to my new home?
You can bring any personal possessions that you would like to have in your new bedroom. This includes your bed, bedside table, clothes, keepsakes, photos, decor and even your TV if you wish to. Extra possessions that you may wish to bring to the house for common areas will need to be discussed with the home supervisor and the other house members, as all of the common areas of the home are fully furnished by ACA.
